see you in Hamburg?

see you in Hamburg?

It’s been a very long time since we were all last at SMM together…

Massimo Mariani our CEO & Managing Director, Chris Sparrow our International Commercial Director and Cristina Pratolongo our Sales Manager will all be on our stand A4 323 at this year’s SMM from September 6th-9th.

We look forward to meeting old friends and making new ones there.

As we go into the main holiday season, we wish you all a pleasant summer wherever it may take you.  And we look forward to seeing very many of you in Hamburg in a few weeks’ time.

And if you need us in the meantime, QIN’s support for your large-bore piston ring requirements is always just a phone call or an email away.

mwm d484? Yes we can…

mwm d484? Yes we can…

Do you work with the MWM D484? If so, please read on…

It’s been a while since our last post, but that’s because we’ve been very busy here at QIN during Q1 of 2022 with a full order book and lots of new projects to get stuck into – of which more will be revealed during the course of the rest of the year…

Somewhere in the middle of all that, a new Asian contact of ours asked us if we were able to manufacture piston rings suitable for the MWM D484 engine. We were pleased to be able to confirm that we could indeed: it is one of a number of MWM models with which we have become familiar over the years and for which we are able to deliver rings offering OEM levels of quality and reliability, even if we are not the OEM supplier.

And so that new Asian contact has become a new Asian customer! Here’s a picture of one of the first of those ringsets to come off the production line earlier this week.

We’re here to help any more of you who may find yourself working with the D484, or indeed any other MWM engine.

Marine engine piston rings, locomotive piston rings, industrial piston rings, steam turbine sealing rings, power plant engine piston rings, piston rings for diesel engines, piston rings for gas engines: we cover all these applications here at QIN across a bore range which extends from 160mm now up to 640mm.

QIN – ALWAYS GOING GREENER

QIN – ALWAYS GOING GREENER

Manufacturing OEM-Quality piston rings which ensure the safe and efficient operation of large-bore engines is, inescapably, energy-intensive work. But at QIN we are always looking for ways to be as environmentally-friendly as possible and to reduce our carbon footprint.

And so, during the course of late 2021, and with support from the EU Regional Development Fund and their Italian national and regional partners, a 160 KWp photovoltaic plant has been installed on the roof of our factory.

This plant will turn the Genoa sunshine into an estimated 206,000 KWh of electricity a year, feeding directly into our production plant and saving emissions calculated as up to 109,368kg of carbon dioxide every year from now on.

So you can be sure when you work with QIN that not only do you have our commitment to providing you with the best quality piston rings at the best prices, but that we will do this in a way which is as friendly to the planet as it possibly can be.

Marine engine piston rings, locomotive piston rings, industrial piston rings, steam turbine sealing rings, power plant engine piston rings: we cover all these applications here at QIN across a bore range which extends from 160mm up to 600mm.

QIN PISTON RINGS FOR STEAM LOCOMOTIVES.

QIN PISTON RINGS FOR STEAM LOCOMOTIVES.

Not all the work we do involves manufacturing piston rings from modern base materials and applying chrome ceramic coatings to them, far from it…

We regularly work with the Austrian Society for Railway History (ÖGEG), and supplied them with a set of rings earlier this year for one of their locomotives which is nearly 80 years old. Here is what they told us about this project.

“Our locomotive has been built in 1944 by company Franco-Belge in occupied France as a part of the German war effort. These locomotives were built to a war standardization program intended to build standardized locomotive types with minimized use of materials and work. Accordingly these locomotives were kept very simple and also were designed to work on temporary light railway tracks and were built for different gauges from 600 mm to even 1435 mm.

At the end of WWII, our locomotive with some others of this type found itself in Austria, with members of its class spread all over Europe and examples now preserved in Austria, France and even the UK.

The Austrian Federal Railways modified four locomotives of this type to tender locomotives and renamed these locomotives to series from 699.0 to 699.1. During its working life our locomotive 699.103 served on the now closed Carinthian narrow gauge railway line Völkermarkt-Kühnsdorf to Eisenkappel and after closure of this line was transferred to the Upper Austrian Steyr Velley line, where it was, due to its low speed but high tractive effort mainly used for freight line traffic.

After this narrow gauge line was also closed in 1982 after a land slide, the locomotive was waiting for an uncertain future in the loco shed in Gartsen. In 1984 the Austrian Society for Railway History (ÖGEG) managed to take over a 17 km long part of the Steyr Valley Line from Steyr to Grünburg and to purchase 3 of the locomotives used in the final years of pre-preservation operation of the line.

In 1985 preservation service was established and locomotive 699.103 was recommissioned for operation on the Steyr Valley Railway line. After it’s second general overhaul in preservation era completed in 2021 locomotive 699.103 is now ready to pull happy guests on special trains again.

We are very happy with the support given to us by QIN on this project.”

ARE YOU STILL SUPPORTING LARGE-BORE SKL ENGINES?

ARE YOU STILL SUPPORTING LARGE-BORE SKL ENGINES?

…if so, then please read on…

There are still 100s and 100s of SKL engines out there, and QIN continues to happily support those who continue to work with them.

Here’s one set from a current order heading into Eastern Europe for a customer who is working with the 6VDS48/42…

At QIN, we believe in supporting our customers and in turn their end-users throughout the lifetimes of all the engines which we are able to support them with. It is a very simple philosophy, and one which places our customers at the heart of all that we do.

So, whereas we know that others are looking to discontinue support for older engines from the likes of SKL and impose Last Time Buys on those who have bought from them previously, we will continue to support those who already come to QIN for rings for these engines and to welcome others still working with these engines who find their way to us now.

Within the Industriale files we also hold information on very many older rings from other engine builders who have long since stopped building engines. And where we do not have existing designs, we are always able to reverse-engineer compression rings or scraper rings for engines old and new from drawings or samples.

Whilst a large part of the work we do involves the supply of large-bore piston rings, be they modern compression rings with chrome ceramic coatings or energised oil scraper rings for marine and power applications, a good proportion of our work involves the supply of other types of rings for other applications – such as steam turbine sealing rings
